Monitoring Upper Arlington neighborhoods for speeding violations can be a challenge for the Police Division. Oftentimes the very presence of a police vehicle is all it takes to reform the worst repeat offenders, and with a finite number of on duty officers, many other policing issues can quickly take priority on any given day.
But our residents do contact the division with reports of speeding cut-through traffic within their neighborhood streets, and it’s an issue that concerns us all.
To help focus police efforts on speeding in the coming months, the division has invested in what’s known as a Stealth Stat. This small computer can be unobtrusively mounted on a pole to gather data on the frequency of traffic and speeds on any given road.
From the resulting report, officers can obtain details of the lowest and highest speeds that occurred during this time period, identify the average speed, and determine whether or not there is a higher preponderance of motorists traveling above the posted speed limit on any given street. This will allow them to identify the difference between actual and perceived speeding problems, and to focus their prevention efforts where they are most needed.
Stealth Stat is a tool you can request for use in your neighborhood, if you believe you’re experiencing issues with speeding motorists. Typically, the Stealth Stat will be in one particular area for a period of approximately three days before moving on again, and request fulfillment is subject to availability and the order in which requests are received. Please note - a large number of requests have been received since the program began in June 2004 and it might take three or more months before Police can address your request.
Stealth Stat results are being posted on this section of the City's website, enabling residents to check in and periodically see the results for their particular area of interest.
If you would like to know more about the Stealth Stat program, or would like to request it be used in your neighborhood, please contact Police Lieutenant Ernest Ankrom, at 583-5150, or click here to complete an online request form.
