UA Police Have Been Helping Our Children Stay Safe for Many Years

The dangers facing our children in today’s society are seemingly ever more complex. Like me, I’m sure many adults can remember their childhood summers filled with unsupervised fun and adventure with friends, coming home to an unlocked back door, with our parents barely giving a thought to how safe we were. For most communities those days are gone.

This is the time of year for our little ones to head off to the pool, hang out with their friends or hit the fields for their t-ball games. One program can help teach our children to be safe in all these situations and more.

Safety Town is a two-week summer preschool offered by the Police Division at which children learn about all aspects of child safety - from traffic safety, to fire safety, animal safety to stranger dangers. Founded in 1971, approximately 400 young children attend each summer, learning how to make wise decisions in potentially dangerous situations as well as to handle emergencies in their young lives. Students gain hands-on knowledge of pedestrian and bicycle safety by tricycling around a miniature town complete with streets, sidewalks, buildings, stop signs and a working traffic signal.

Our Community Relations Officer Heather Galli plans and supervises the Safety Town program, which is funded through participant registration fees. Officer Galli oversees a team of local teachers and student aids, with many volunteer guest speakers stopping by to provide insight on their areas of expertise.

The 2008 Safety Town is scheduled at Wickliffe Elementary School over a two-week period, with the first two sessions offered Monday, June 16 through Friday, June 27, and the second two sessions offered Monday, July 7 through Friday, July 18. Morning sessions are held from 9 a.m.–Noon, afternoon sessions from 1–4 p.m. For residents of UA, the entrance fee is $65 and for nonresidents it is $80. Registration is offered on a first-come, first-served basis.

Children entering Kindergarten or first grade are eligible to attend Safety Town. They must be five years of age prior to September 30, 2008 in order to qualify for registration.

Our children need safety education, and Safety Town can be an important first step to understanding what they can do to lead a safe life in today’s world. If you have a youngster who is nearing his/her first experiences away from your (or a caregiver’s) direct supervision, you might want to take advantage of this excellent program.
