The dangers facing our children in today’s society are seemingly ever more complex. While many older generations can remember many hours of unsupervised fun and adventure with our friends, the back door never being locked, with barely a thought given to how safe we were, for most communities those days are gone.
Increased vehicular traffic has pushed pedestrian and bicycling activities further into neighborhoods or even curtailed these healthy activities for many families. We lock our doors and install security systems to protect our homes and families from outsiders. Even within our homes, the rise of computers has brought with it the very real dangers of Internet predatory activity.
Just as the dangers facing our children changes over time, our communities’ laws and safety educational programs evolve in order to keep pace with and appropriately address the newest challenges.
Effective Midnight April 11, 2007, the City of Upper Arlington has enacted legislation pertaining to convicted sexual offenders, requiring that they register with the City’s Police Division if they live and/or work within the City’s boundaries. It also prohibits convicted sexual offenders from living or working within 1,000 feet of any school premises, licensed daycare facility, preschool, public park, swimming pool, library or playground.
In addition to notification requirements within the Ohio Revised Code, the Upper Arlington Police Division will now notify residents within five business days of learning that a convicted sexual offender resides or works within 1,000 feet of your residence. As part of the notification, you will receive the name, address, crime and an image of the offender, as long as the information is verifiable and reliable.
In addition, we have added a section to the City’s Web site that provides information on the new legislation and posts details of known registered sex offenders living or working in our community. Visit www.ua-ohio.net under the Resident Services / Police section. An informational brochure is also available, by calling my office at 583-5150.
While these laws are designed to help protect families, they are not the sole solution to this problem. Parents should continue to be aware of and take proactive steps to protect their children from such dangers. The Police Division offers various educational seminars on stranger danger, Internet Predators and other relevant topics, and can direct you to useful resources and Web sites. Call our Community Relations Officer at 583-5195 for additional details.
