Public Education
Overview
The mission statement of the Fire Division includes the clause, "Through training and education, we will provide for the safety and well-being of the public...". With this in mind, our main focus continues to be a comprehensive fire safety education program in grades pre-school through eight. We present nine different lesson plans to students in their school setting, with reinforcement in each topic each year. None of the classes are taught in an "assembly" type environment. Rather, we use retired former professional educators (teachers and principals) to deliver our message in each classroom of every school, every year. Although much more labor-intensive, we also believe this approach is much more effective. We believe this is the only program of this type in the state of Ohio, and feel it results in a well-educated student body.
Fire Safety House
The Fire Division operates a mobile laboratory, called "Sparky's House", used to teach proper behavior and techniques in a fire emergency. The current unit was placed in service in 1999, as a result of the generosity and success of annual fundraising efforts by Upper Arlington Firefighters Local 1521. Both children and adults can benefit from lessons that include leaving a building quickly, crawling low in smoke, and using escape ladders. The house is designed with bedrooms and a kitchen, and is equipped with fire and smoke alarms as well as machinery to create a non-toxic, smoke-filled environment. We continually attempt to expand the events at which the safety house is involved. We regularly utilize it at Safety Town, the Labor Day Arts Festival, and Fire Prevention Week. Groups wishing to tour the house must call ahead for an appointment.
Safety Town
At Safety Town, we are invited by the Police Division to present fire safety lessons for two days of every session. This results in contact with an average of 500 pre-schoolers over the two annual sessions each summer.
Fire Extinguisher Training
The Fire Division provides extinguisher training to many businesses, labs, extended care facilities, and medical offices. "Hands-on" experience is an integral part of these training sessions, with participants experiencing "live fire" in a controlled environment.
CPR Training
Residents wishing to learn cardiopulmonary resuscitation can register via the city's Lifelong Learning and Leisure program at 614-583-5333, or may call the local chapter of the American Red Cross.
