Fire Hydrant Flushing
Fire Services
Each Spring, the Fire Division conducts annual fire hydrant flushing to ensure proper operation.
Residents are notified about the flushing in advance via an automated telephone call, and via details in the Upper Arlington News and This Week Upper Arlington newspapers. In addition, signage is placed each day at the major intersections of the area being serviced.
Flushing operations can dislodge rust and scale in water lines, especially in the older sections of the City. Area residents are advised to refrain from running water until the evening and to allow water to run freely through all plumbing fixtures until it clears, especially with washing machines to avoid staining clothes. Partially fill washing machines and then spin the water out before adding a normal load of laundry. Also, refrain from using hot water taps during flushing operations to avoid water heaters filling up and storing rusty water.
Residual rust and sediment may break loose and affect residents’ water several hours after flushing operations are complete and residents may encounter rusty water on more than one date due to the interconnection of the City’s underground water mains. Despite its unappealing appearance, rusty water poses no threat to residents’ health.
