Spring is on our doorstep and summer will be here before we know it. Just like the ever changing seasons in Ohio, our department prides itself on constantly changing to bring our residents new, exciting and FUN programming.
We have just completed our first full year of working under the guiding principles set forth in the Parks & Recreation Strategic Plan, paying special attention to the plan’s Immediate Recommendations. Specific accomplishments include the establishment of a Field Sports Advisory Committee, public meetings to discuss the Northam Park recreation hub and identify stakeholders for a community task force, development of the Sunny 95 Park master plan, establishment of a centralized reservation/scheduling process and development of a detailed work plan by our Department.
The Strategic Plan also brought dedicated funding, allowing implementation of our 2007 work plan and making an immediate impact on specific areas within our parks system. These parks improvements directly enhanced offerings throughout the department, especially within the Recreation, Cultural Arts and Parks & Forestry Divisions. One of the most significant improvements was to Cardiff Woods Park where the Cultural Arts and Tree Commissions partnered to enhance the park while adding an “Art in Public Spaces” installation of natural stone seating with an artistic flair. Another completed project includes a partnership with the Solid Waste Authority of Central Ohio (SWACO) and the Recreation Division to place plastic bottle recycling containers at all our aquatic facilities and special events. In addition, a new canine-friendly drinking fountain was installed in the south end of Thompson Park, field improvements were made at the Reed Road Park Oldtimer’s Field, and the addition of specialized laser grading equipment to improve the playing surface of all 17 City-owned ballfields. The Tree Trek program at Northam, Thompson and Fancyburg Parks was completed along with the opening of a mulched, creekside nature trail at Miller Park. Look for improved path drainage on the north side of the Northam Park Tennis Courts, with the installation of additional catch basins within the next few months.
As with every plan, some tasks are more challenging than others and some are completed in a shorter time frame than others. As we move forward with the Strategic Plan, rest assured we are constantly striving to meet or exceed the goals set forth within the plan. Groundbreaking should occur at Sunny 95 Park in 2008, none too soon for many groups interested in its use. Another one of those goals is the ongoing development of an overall site plan for Northam Park and the surrounding area. The advantage of a strong working relationship between our department, UA Schools and the Library will prove beneficial for all entities, and enhance the quality of life for UA residents through this master plan.
Look for new and exciting program offerings in this edition of our brochure and save the dates for our supersized Spring Fling and Summer Celebration special events. See you at the park…where we really do make fun happen!
