Reed Road Water Park
Introduction | Grand Opening Details | Fact Sheet | Construction Updates
Following many months of detailed study and extensive community participation, the vision for a new and much improved outdoor pool facility for the community became a reality June 2004.
The former Hastings Pool was demolished September 2004, and work undertaken to construct the new Reed Road Water Park.
As the design shows, we essentially created a pool in a park. The new pool represents a blending of key resident ideas and wishes made apparent through the 2003 Pool Visioning Process, and a desire to create a facility that caters to all age groups and interests, is in keeping with today's standard for outdoor aquatics facilities, and incorporates the recommendations brought forward from the experienced design team of Burgess and Niple.
An unusual feature is how the slide tower has been incorporated into the facility. To enable its inclusion while keeping within budget parameters, the slides don't run into the pool, a more costly option, but into run outs. This win-win option provides additional fun for the youngsters while ensuring more pool space is dedicated to other uses.
The sentinment throughout meetings of the Pools Council Committee, and ultimately the recommendations taken before City Council as a whole for approval, have remained committed to providing a comprehensive facility. The new pool features:
- Heated water
- Lap lanes
- Diving well
- Slide tower
- Moving channel and vortex area
- Wading pool
- Zero depth entry
- Play area
- Concession/snack bar
- Changing rooms with lockers and showers (includes a family changing room)
- Smaller lockers for valuables
- Outdoor showers
- Shade structures
- Extensive landscaping with grass play, family and teen areas
Hastings was selected as the first pool in the process because it was clearly the one in greatest need. As preparations began for construction, soil borings confirmed that the City was wise to renvoate Hastings first. Samples from several areas indicated that extensive leaking from the pool was already occurring, and these conditions would have worsened over the freeze/thaw conditions of winter. Based on the information obtained, 2004 would have been Hastings last season, whether the new renovation was in progress or not.
