Spring/Summer 2008 Music & Dance Classes

*Rhythms of African Drumming
with Balla Sy

For thousands of years the drum has been used in various cultures as a basic tool for communication, personal expression and to profoundly integrate the senses. Even in modern life, drumming can promote self-confidence and a feeling of general well-being and relaxation. It can improve coordination and motor skills while sharpening your concentration as you focus to master different drum patterns. Begin your sensory journey with the drum and explore a powerful and healing activity in this hands-on beginning level class. In four weeks learn to play a few West African rhythms on the djembe using three basic hand patterns, the bass, tone and slap. This is a wonderful opportunity to try something totally new. No musical experience is necessary. If you have a djembe, bring it to class. If not, a $20 drum rental fee is paid to the instructor on the first evening of class. You may have seen Balla, a native of Senegal, playing and charming the crowd on the Cultural Arts float in the 2007 Upper Arlington Fourth of July parade.

This technique builds speed and fluidity of movement on the fingerboard, and helps the student to develop a more professional and confident style of playing. Please bring a cassette recorder and a blank cassette tape to the first class. An instructional packet is provided at the first class.
