Do you hate paying expensive home repair bills? Well, here is your chance to cut those costs and learn how to do some minor home repairs yourself. In this combination lecture-demonstration class, we discuss many aspects of minor home repairs and improvements and what you can reasonably attempt on your own before resorting to calling a contractor. Discover that you know more than you think you do. With just a little guidance and instruction, many home repairs are simple and easy to do with little-to-no experience needed. Handouts are provided with helpful resources, directions and information to use as a home reference source. The class format is interactive, so come prepared with questions.

*Do It Yourself: Home Repair Series

In this hands-on four-class series, we look at specific yet common household problems and learn how to fix them. We also identify and work with various types of home repair equipment and tools to help familiarize you with these items while lowering your anxiety level with handling them. You learn how to repair many things around your home, as well as learn tips and techniques that help you maintain your home yourself or better determine when it is time to call in a professional. This class is a practical extension of the one-session introduction, What Contractors Don’t Want You to Know.

Tools, Tips and Techniques
Learn what tools every home should have, what jobs they can be used for and how to use them correctly. We also talk about helpful hints that can help you do a job right the first time and reduce the need for further repairs or costly contractor calls. We discuss tools as they relate to common household problems like jammed garbage disposals, stopped-up bathroom or kitchen sinks and other sticky situations that you may encounter as a homeowner. With step-by-step instruction and the proper tools, learn how to diagnose and fix these problems yourself, quickly and easily.

Minor Electrical Repair
This evening we cover various aspects of common minor electrical issues. We discuss how to identify and pinpoint an electrical problem in your home, how to fix minor electrical problems such as changing a light switch and replacing or moving an outlet receptacle and how to install of a ceiling fan or new light. Learn basics covering the do’s and don’ts of electricity as a sometimes dangerous power source, which can help dispel the fear associated with it, as well as helping you determine the appropriate time to call for an electrician’s expertise.

Minor Plumbing Repair
We cover several aspects of common household plumbing problems such as a continuously-running toilet, a broken toilet handle, slow-draining sink, leaks and replacing a toilet. We also discuss some of the specific tools needed for plumbing repair and helpful and practical tips and techniques to help avoid future plumbing problems. We also talk about caulking, discussing the different types of caulk, as well as impart some helpful hints on using it correctly.

General Home Repairs/Improvements
We cover working with drywall and joint compound; how to fix minor scratches, dents and holes in walls; and introduce you to the many available products that make doing these kinds of repairs simple and inexpensive. We also discuss how to properly use wall anchors and why they are so critical when hanging decorative items. Painting tips and techniques and some basic concepts for choosing the right brush or roller for the job are addressed as well.

Flowering Begonia Wreath

Garden Design Workshop
with Christie Nohle, Urban Gardener
Learn basic design principles of color, texture, scale, rhythm, repetition and form in this hands-on workshop. Adapt these concepts to your specific site as you plan a customized garden mixed with trees, shrubs, perennials, annuals and bulbs. Christie provides her expert assistance and input as you draw and add to your master plan each week. The final evening she meets with each student in a short individualized session to provide some specific guidance on their completed plan. Drawing supplies are discussed at the first class and the suggested text for this workshop, The Well Designed Mixed Garden by Tracy DiSabato-Aust, ($43.) is available for purchase from the instructor. To get the most out of the class, students need to do homework between sessions.
