Introduction to the PC
with Gayle Howard
Gain hands-on experience as you learn to turn the computer on and off, use the mouse and keyboard and become familiar with the Windows operating system. Other tasks include how to maximize and minimize a window; how to find, start and end a program; and how to switch between active programs. The instructor covers the ways PC owners can customize their desktop. If time permits, the class also explores the file system and utility programs. This class is not intended for Macintosh users.

Microsoft Windows
with Jay Zenitsky
Now that you have mastered the basics, it’s time to examine the workings of the Windows XP operating system. Learn how to manipulate the desktop, save and delete documents, manage folders and file items where you can easily retrieve them. Also learn how to create backups, launch applications and, if time permits, get a hands-on understanding of word processing software. By the end of the class you should be able to unravel the mysteries of the PC and be ready to learn the Internet and popular software applications. Skills learned are transferable to older versions of Windows.

Microsoft Office

This hands-on class provides a brief overview of the four basic components of the Microsoft Office software suite version 2003. Microsoft Word, a word processing application to help you write letters and reports and Microsoft Excel, a spreadsheet and charting program, are the primary focus of this class. Microsoft Outlook, an email and calendar program along with Microsoft PowerPoint, a presentation package, are described in less detail.

Microsoft Word

Learn the basics of word processing including how to enter text, use toolbars and menus to format and edit your document. We also cover how to save and open files, perform character and paragraph formatting, work with tabs, tables and explain the autocorrect feature. Although typing skills are not necessary, you need to be familiar with the mouse and the basic Windows operating system. A textbook is included in the registration fee.

Microsoft Excel

This course introduces students with PC experience to basic spreadsheet concepts. A component of Microsoft Office, Excel is a user-friendly spreadsheet program, which allows the user to easily analyze, report and share data. Learn to create, edit, save and print simple worksheets, cell formatting, functions, formulas, sorting, grouping, charts and graphs. A textbook with CD is included in the registration fee.

Build a Free Website
with Gayle Howard
In this hands-on class, we cover the basics of building a website from content through design, utilizing free templates online and publishing it to the Internet using a free web-hosting service. Its applications are wide-ranging and unique and can feature small businesses, organizations, resumes, special occasions or events or even family updates. This class should appeal to anyone looking to post a website without any out-of-pocket expense. Basic computer skills and some experience with the Internet are required. A suggested supply list and pre-class assignment are mailed one week prior to the class.
