Simple Photography Techniques
with Barb Schwartz
“But if I used my flash, why is the room so dark?” “Why are Fido’s eyes so red?” “Why are my kids’ photos always so blurry?” Do any of these comments ring a familiar bell with you? This class is specifically designed for novice students who are just beginning to get familiar with their cameras and want to learn some very simple techniques to improve their picture-taking skills and increase their knowledge of basic photography concepts. We cover a variety of useful tips and techniques you need to know to start getting better photographic results right away. We also discuss what you can do to improve your basic composition style and visually enhance your photos of people, pets, sports and nature. Bring your camera, film or digital, and the instruction booklet.

Tips & Techniques in SLR Photography

Once you have mastered the basics, learn how to compose and shoot successfully through a combination of hands-on lectures, demonstrations, projects and constructive critiques designed to specifically improve your technical skills. By understanding and utilizing the same simple photographic techniques that professionals use every day, you can further your photographic expertise and more easily generate the images you want to create. Topics include camera and equipment basics and how to enhance images using your camera in either automatic or manual settings. You also learn about working successfully in natural light or with a flash; the basics of exposure and composition; and how to improve the quality of all of your images including portraits, candid shots, nature and active sports photos. Photo homework is assigned. Bring your camera and instruction booklet to the first class.

Creating In Clay

Create your own pottery, beginning with wedging the clay and ending with glazing your finished pieces. Learn each step of the process through targeted demonstrations as well as receiving the individual guidance needed to create your own simple original designs. All potters gain confidence in the use of materials and ceramic processes in this hands-on class. You have access to your own wheel and tools. Clay, glazes and firing are included in the registration fee. Wear clothing suitable for a working studio environment.

Beginning Drawing

Art begins with drawing. The format is easy, step-by-step instruction designed to give you a basic foundation in the skills needed to begin drawing with confidence. Progressive lessons gradually introduce students to essential drawing techniques: recording edges; creating dimension; adding accuracy; balancing compositional elements; and developing and expanding values with pencil, pen, Conte and wash. with Dennis Van Sickle
Landscape scenes have inspired artists and art lovers for centuries. Learn how to paint your own originals using watercolor as the medium. The instructor is a past president of the Central Ohio Watercolor Society with many years of experience teaching watercolor painting classes. Through demonstrations and one-on-one instruction, Dennis shows you what it takes to make your paintings look professional. The class covers composition, design, color mixing, using color to show depth and perspective, matting and framing, and presentation tips. Basic watercolor techniques and the minimal supply list are discussed at the first class so even a beginner will feel comfortable. Bring several landscape photos to use as possible painting subjects. The first evening is a demonstration class only.

Acrylic Workshop

The acrylic medium is exciting and versatile. It can be applied in many ways with a variety of brush strokes resulting in an array of visual effects – transparent, opaque, vibrant or light in tone. Varied subject matter and new techniques require your unique creative touch in this class that includes both individual attention and constructive class critique. Although some painting experience is helpful, all levels are welcome. A supply list is mailed one week prior to the first class if requested.

with Vivian Ripley
Try your hand at portraiture as Vivian helps you create a likeness while giving valuable input on proportion, light and shade relating to the human torso. After demonstration and practice, students work from a live model in the medium of their choice. Oils must be water-soluable. Vivian holds memberships in the Degas Pastel Society, Ohio Watercolor Society and the National Oil and Acrylic Painting Society and is well qualified to provide personal instruction in your medium. Some drawing experience is helpful. The class schedule includes a one-hour lunch break. A supply list is mailed one week prior to the class.

Chinese Brush Painting

With its spontaneous, seemingly effortless strokes, subtle colors and innovative use of space, the medium of Chinese brush painting is both delicate and extremely expressive. Students practice basic brush strokes, application of color washes and use principles of composition to create a personal impression of the essence of a beautiful moment in nature.
