*Simple Photography Techniques

“But if I used my flash, why is the room so dark?” “Why are Fido’s eyes so red?” “Why are my kids’ photos always so blurry?” Do any of these comments ring a familiar bell with you? This one-session class is specifically designed for novice students who are just beginning to get familiar with their cameras and want to learn some very simple techniques to improve their picture-taking skills and increase their beginning knowledge of basic photography concepts. We cover a variety of useful tips and techniques you need to know to start getting better photographic results right away. We also discuss what you can do to improve your basic composition style and visually enhance your photos of people, pets, sports, and nature. Bring your camera, film or digital, and the instruction booklet.

Tips & Techniques in SLR Photography

Once you have mastered the basics, learn how to compose and shoot successfully through a combination of hands-on lectures, demonstrations, projects and critiques designed to specifically improve your technical skills. By understanding and utilizing the same simple photographic techniques that professionals use every day, you can further your photographic expertise and more easily generate the images you want to create. Topics include camera and equipment basics and how to enhance images using your camera in either automatic or manual settings. You also learn about working successfully in natural light or with a flash, the basics of exposure and composition, and how to improve the quality of all of your images including portraits, candid shots, nature and active sports photos. Photo homework is assigned and there are helpful class critiques throughout the course. Bring your camera and instruction booklet to the first class.

Clay from the Potter’s Wheel
with Nicole Tolbert
Create your own pottery, beginning with wedging the clay and ending with glazing your finished pieces. Learn each step of the process through focused demonstrations. You have access to your own wheel and tools and are provided with all materials, guidance and one-on-one instruction needed to create your own pieces. Wear casual clothes suitable for a studio environment. Class size is limited to 12 students and the cost includes clay, glazes and firing. The final class meets for one hour only to pick up your finished pieces.

Introduction to Calligraphy
with Pam Skora
This introductory class focusing on the basics of calligraphy is taught by Pam Skora, a member of the Association of Calligraphic Artists. Work with a calligraphic marker, instead of the more intimidating dip pen and ink to learn the techniques of the art of writing beautifully. Learn a simple variation of Italic, the most recognized lettering style of this genre. It is wonderfully impressive to use on invitations, announcements, poems and scrapbooking. Bring a 3.5 calligraphy marker. Paper and instructional handouts are included in the registration fee.

With its spontaneous, seemingly effortless strokes, subtle colors and innovative use of space, the medium of Chinese Brush Painting is both delicate and extremely expressive. Students practice basic brush strokes, application of color washes and use principles of composition to create a personal impression of the essence of a beautiful moment in nature. A 30-minute lunch break is provided and students can brown bag it if they wish. A supply list is mailed one week prior to the class.

Watercolor for Beginners
with Mindy Newman
Watercolorist Mindy Newman, provides step-by-step instruction in basic watercolor techniques, specifically geared to beginners in this medium. Work individually as the instructor demonstrates and directs your efforts to complete two paintings. Learn to prepare the paper and palette and view demonstrations of basic watercolor techniques, such as laying the wash, dry brush, soft edge, reverse flow and vertical holds. Learn to draw for painting purposes and explore concepts of color theory and composition as well. This class provides an inexpensive opportunity to experience watercolor, since all supplies are included in the registration fee.
