Botanical Name: Abies concolor
Common Name: White (Concolor) Fir
White Fir has many desirable assets that make it an easy pick for one of my favorite evergreens. Abies concolor is an evergreen tree that will reach approximately 30-50’ high and 15- 30’ in spread. Like other firs, Concolor Fir has flattened needles but the needles are wider and much longer than most other firs. The needles have a waxy surface and the color is usually an outstanding bluish silver/gray. The Concolor has a conical growth habit and tight branching that gives it a very rigid appearance. All of these qualities combined with the tree’s excellent needle retention, make this fir a wonderful Christmas tree selection. Abies concolor also tolerates heat, drought, and pollution better than most other firs, which makes it the best fir species for Central Ohio. The tree is native to the mild climates of our Southwestern U.S., but is cold hardy to zone 4. The Concolor is a rather slow grower, so I recommend starting with a 6-8’ balled and burlap tree from a reputable source. The tree can stand alone nicely in the landscape and make a wonderful winter statement, as this one does at Upper Arlington’s Thompson Park. The soft texture, slow growth rate, and fabulous year round color also make it the perfect focal point for a flower garden.
