Richard Harned: Perfect Cube

July 22 - August 20, 2008
Reception Monday July 28, 6-7:30 p.m.

Perfect Cube, by Richard Harned

The City of Upper Arlington Concourse Gallery presents Richard Harned: Perfect Cube, an exhibition of Richard Harned’s installation titled Perfect Cube.Based on the concept of a mathematical theory of a hypercube, Perfect Cube, is an installation of metal arches and bowling balls spanning 25’x25’, inviting the viewer to experience the space within a new framework. At each crest of an arch, a bowling ball connects the steel rods and delineates the space for the viewer to walk through and under. The hypercube design is a four-dimensional object in theory which is seen three-dimensionally through Harned’s design. Through his artworks Harned explores the relationship between technology and glass.

Artist Richard Harned received his Bachelor of Fine Arts and Master of Fine Arts at the Rhode Island School of Design under the instruction of Dale Chihuly. He is a professor in The Ohio State University’s Department of Art, coordinating the glass program and is an adjunct faculty member of the Department’s Art and Technology program, as well as the OSU College of Arts ACCAD. Active in the Columbus arts community, Harned has served as board member on the Greater Columbus Arts Council and founded Glass Axis, a non profit workshop and artists’ organization for Central Ohio. He has also worked, lectured and taught nationally and internationally, receiving the Individual Artist Fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Ohio Arts Council.

By its definition, installation art is multi-media, multi-dimensional and multi-form works that are created temporarily for a particular space or site. Experience the installation of Perfect Cube and visit the Concourse Gallery.
