Join us in the Concourse Gallery for a conversation on art with artist Chris Steele,
whose work is featured in the exhibit.
Upper Arlington artist shares work of past 30 years. Steele received his Bachelor of Fine Arts from O.S.U. in 1970. He works in a variety of media and likes to tackle serious content with
humor. Come see his whimsical mechanical contraptions, works from the series, “Pencils are mightier than swords”, and his recent photography of other-than-man-made Ohio Crop Circles in the Concourse Gallery. (Ohio is the #1 State in U.S for reported crop circles.)

The City of Upper Arlington Concourse Gallery presents The Art of Chris Steele, celebrating the original and interactive constructions created by one of Columbus’ most independent and innovative artists Chris Steele, on view from April 16 – May 12, 2008. Please join us for a reception on Monday April 21, 6 to 7:30 p.m. The Concourse Gallery is located at the Municipal Services Center, 3600 Tremont Road, and is free and open to the public Monday through Friday from 8 a.m.–5 p.m.

Through this retrospective the Upper Arlington-born artist shares works created over the last 30 years in his studio and through his work with Citizens for a Better Skyline Inc. (CBSI). Steele received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Ceramics from The Ohio State University in 1970 and continues to create works of art in clay along with a variety of other materials, including wood, canvas, paper, paint, fiberglass, metal and found objects. He likes to tackle serious content with humor. In 1980, his art was selected by Marcia Tucker for “Outside New York State of Ohio” an exhibition on display at the New Museum in Soho, New York City. Using his artwork as props, Chris participated in a public performance through Ballet Met, University Dance Company, and Wright State’s Conceptual/Performance Showcase in 1981.

In addition to his sculptural works and his 25 years of creating architectural models, Steele is active in Columbus’ community development as president and leader of CBSI since 1983. Under his leadership the organization has completed public art projects with support from the Greater Columbus Arts Council and Ohio Arts Council, including the Mona Lisa mural in Italian Village. Experience the breadth and depth of creative works by Chris Steele in the Concourse Gallery. The Ohio Arts Council helped fund this program with state tax dollars to encourage economic growth, educational excellence and cultural enrichment for all Ohioans.
