Reception Monday November 11, 6-7:30 p.m.
The City of Upper Arlington Concourse Gallery presents Installation: Boarded Up, an art installation created by local artist John Davies on view from October 29 – November 28, 2008. Please join us for a reception on Monday November 11 to 7:30 p.m. and a conversation with artist John Davies during Artspeak on Wednesday November 12, 2008 at noon. The Concourse Gallery is located at the Municipal Services Center, 3600 Tremont Road, and is free and open to the public Monday through Friday from 8 a.m.–5 p.m.
The Concourse Gallery is transformed through the installation art created by John Davies. Installation art is multi-media, multi-dimensional and multi-form work temporarily created for a particular space or site either outdoors or indoors. With his installation "Boarded Up", Davies pursues his interest in the concept of visual paradoxes by using traditional material in an unconventional way.
Davies reflects, “Traditional plywood is ubiquitous in the functional closing of space in an attempt to secure and make safe. Conversely, the installation of thin translucent vinyl, mimicking traditional plywood onto the Concourse Gallery clerestory windows, causes subtle visual displacement, impeding, but not entirely blocking their intended function as a light emitting source. ‘Boarded Up’ is an attempt to explore the edges of paradoxical visual cognition.”
John Davies is a graduate of the Columbus College of Art and Design (CCAD) and a past Chairman of the Department of Art and Design at the College of Dayton Art Institute. In 1981, he had a solo show at the O.K. Harris Gallery in New York, where pieces appearing in the Concourse Gallery exhibition were shown for the first time. Since then Davies has continued to create artwork in addition to his career as a graphic designer.
