Material and Metaphor

September 24 - October 24, 2008
Reception Monday October 6, 6-7:30 p.m.
Artspeak Wednesday October 8, 12 p.m.

The City of Upper Arlington Concourse Gallery presents Material and Metaphor, an exhibition of Ann Silverman’s works of art on view from September 24 – October 24, 2008.

Ann Silveman’s work explores metaphor and meaning expressed through the material of paper. Ann writes “paper, as metaphor, is a surface between natural process and cultural heritage. When I make it, I see its origins in plant fiber and water. When I use it, I see an immense library of human experience. Because my work is about an ongoing conversation between civilization and nature, I want to place it in a space operating as the civic center of a community.” Ann reflects that communities themselves operate like organisms, maintaining their own integrity and the well being of their constituents.

The metaphor of the honey bee, as a social organism, inspires Ann to connect social structures and natural structures. “There is a very permeable interface between social and natural in the case of the honey bee. In human endeavor, however, I believe that there are highly charged gaps between what we intend and what nature intends.” Ann’s exploration of the meaning of the personal, social and universal metaphors through working with the fibrous material of paper, continues to be inspired by a growing and changing nature of the world around us.
