Ann Silveman’s work explores metaphor and meaning expressed through the material of paper. Ann writes “paper, as metaphor, is a surface between natural process and cultural heritage. When I make it, I see its origins in plant fiber and water. When I use it, I see an immense library of human experience. Because my work is about an ongoing conversation between civilization and nature, I want to place it in a space operating as the civic center of a community.” Ann reflects that communities themselves operate like organisms, maintaining their own integrity and the well being of their constituents. The metaphor of the honey bee, as a social organism, inspires Ann to connect social structures and natural structures. “There is a very permeable interface between social and natural in the case of the honey bee.
