Five Women Sculptors
Over Thirty Years of Making Art

Over the past thirty-years, five pairs of hands have rested little, created much and inspired many. The Concourse Gallery presents Five Women Sculptors, from May 17 to June 14, 2007, exhibiting the works of five women whose sculptural work and influence spans the last twenty years of art. Creating artwork in wood, light, fabric, paper, video are the artists of Five Women Sculptors Barbara Chavous, Betty Collings, Ann Dewald, Jeanne Philipp and Yasue Sakaoka.

From Columbus to Dayton to New York and abroad, these five women artists have shared their works, knowledge and passion with the greater arts community. Betty Collings, native of New Zealand and resident of Upper Arlington creates sculpture reflecting organic-natural forms infused with references to technology and science. Collings’ sculptural forms are created in a variety of media including vinyl, plaster, ceramic, bronze and resin. Working in natural materials, Barbara Chavous’ works are wood totemic sculptures, inspired by the Cubists and African native art. Creating sculpture with neon and metal, Ann Dewald, was influenced by the light art of the 1960s. During that time she exhibited her own neon artwork with Dan Flavin, an American minimalist sculptor creating artwork from commercially available fluorescent light fixtures.

Sharing art with others through educational art programs in the schools or teaching in universities is a common thread through the lives of these 5 women artists. Jeanne Philipp has taught, curated and administered art programs throughout many institutions in addition to her artwork. Phillip is an installation artist, creating sounding arc sculptures including video and wood materials. Another art educator and artist Yasue Sakaoka, creates paper sculptures using origami to create the paper-shapes, evoking geometry in nature.

Using geometric abstraction, Chavous explores personal symbols throughout her sculptural work. One of Chavous’ abstract geometric metal sculptures titled The City can be seen in Bicentennial Park on Rich and Civic Center Drives in downtown Columbus as it is owned by the City of Columbus Recreation and Parks. Along with Yasue Sakaoka’s paper sculpture Summor ‘06, Ann Dewald’s Aura, a neon and metal sculpture hang in the City of Upper Arlington Permanent Art Collection. Ann is also featured in the Far, Near, Here: Selections from the Collection of the Columbus Museum of Art, an exhibition at the Ohio Arts Council’s Riffe Gallery, January 25 – April 15, 2007. Join us as the Concourse Gallery celebrates the works displayed in Five Women Sculptors with a reception on May 21, 6-7:30 p.m.
