Upper Arlington Cultural Arts Commission
Mission Statement: The mission of the Upper Arlington Cultural Arts Commission is to provide and promote a diverse, lively, accessible arts environment that advances the cultural assets and enriches the quality of life
of the community.
Brief History of the Cultural Arts Commission
The Upper Arlington Cultural Arts Commission successfully provides arts and cultural activities for the citizens of Upper Arlington, which are very accessible and convenient to all age groups and conveniently located in their own neighborhoods to enable them to see themselves and their community through the arts. City Council and Mayor Chuck Glander formed the Upper Arlington Cultural Arts Commission in 1972 as a branch of city government. The first commission was appointed for a three-year term. All the programming and policy was conducted by an all-volunteer Commission until 1977 when the need became apparent for a part-time staff member. Doris Nelson gave up her Commissioner’s appointment to be the first paid staff member and to become full time in 1978. Various part time staff member were added with CETA funding in the late 70’s and early 80’s. In 1989, the first full time coordinator was hired. As the result of a consultancy in 1992, The Friends of the Arts in Upper Arlington was formed to help raise and accept private funds. This organization has grown in strength and membership each year and currently has about 400 members. The Cultural Arts Division, as the Commission is now called, is a division of the Parks and Recreation Department where it enjoys excellent support from the five other divisions housed in the department. The arts are driven by the City Staff, Arts Manager and Arts Coordinator. The Mayor of Upper Arlington appoints the nine Commission members.
Our diverse programs mean the arts can be a part of the community throughout the year. Art programming includes: Arts in Community Education, Performing Arts, Visual Arts, a Permanent Art Collection shared with the community, and Artslink—our quarterly newsletter. Our City’s signature event, the annual Labor Day Arts Festival, started in 1966 by some of the same artists who founded our Commission, celebrates its thirty-ninth year.
