Cultural Arts Commission
The City of Upper Arlington Cultural Arts Commission presents and invites the community to respond to the UA Community Arts Survey throughout 2008. Look for the survey in your storm water bill in February 2008. Enter to win a work of art when you complete the survey. Copper Wreath, created by local artist Daniela John, valued at $495, can be viewed at Ursus, 2814 Fishinger Road and was graciously donated by Farmers Citizens Bank www.farmerscitizensbank.com.
Recently the Cultural Arts Commission, in a goal-setting session, challenged themselves to create a community arts survey with the following goals:
• Determine awareness of programs/Cultural Arts Commission/Friends of the Arts
• Obtain suggestions for programs
• Obtain suggestions for participating in programs
• Determine current/future support of the programs/cac/foa
• Determine barriers for attending programs
The Upper Arlington Cultural Arts Commission was created by an ordinance of City Council in 1972. The Commission was organized to help foster an appreciation for the arts and artists, create and promote public programs in the arts, and to help children in their development of creative skills and talents.
The Cultural Arts Commission, a branch of the Upper Arlington City government, is governed by nine volunteer Commission members, appointed by the Mayor and approved by City Council. The function of the Commission is to: set broad objectives; determine the scope and selection of programs; develop long-range plans; and provide strong programmatic or financial support either directly or through soliciting support from others.
Meetings are held the first Wednesday of each month, beginning at 6 p.m. and are open to the public. Ideas and suggestions from the public are encouraged by the Commission.

Meet your Cultural Arts Commissioners
They bring with them diverse backgrounds, with varied reasons for choosing to serve the greater community through an active support of the arts. "Art has made me a better person and I want to give people the chance to discover how the arts can affect them positively," says Commission Chair Duncan Snyder, who represents the Commission on the Parks & Recreation Advisory Board and is currently deeply engrossed in the Strategic Plan Task Force activities.
"When doing market research prior to opening (Ursus), most people said they do not purchase original art," says local business owner Diane Maute. "This was surprising to me in a community that has such a high average education level. I am hoping to dispel some of the myths that tend to separate the average person from the arts. I hope to make the arts accessible and engaging, without the snob factor," she continues.
A popular element of Concourse Gallery programming each year is the series of student exhibits, enabling many aspiring young artists in our schools to experience the excitement of showing their work to a greater audience. "The attention to detail and freedom of expression our students have brought to their works on display bring smiles to all who view the work," states Lynda Guenther. "Seeing the excitement of a work on display with an audience makes each piece a stepping stone to further creativity. This is what art should be inspirational!"
Commissioners have inspirational hopes for the future of artistic endeavors in the community. They speak enthusiastically of their hopes for expanding existing programs, to showcase and nurture local writers, artists, singers, dancers, actors and filmmakers, and to facilitate the incorporation of art in community spaces.
"Art pries open your perception and airs out your heart," states Robert Argo. The Commission invites you to experience both through the many
programs they help bring to the community each year.

Super Art Float
4th of July 2007
The Cultural Arts Commission created an artfully inspired float shown in the Upper Arlington 4th of July Parade. The Commission created a display honoring artful icons throughout the generations while a drumming circle performed on the float. Below enjoy the photos commemorating the arts in Upper Arlington's 2007 4th of July Parade.
