Arts in Community Education Programs

The Cultural Arts Division believes in fostering an appreciation for and participation in the arts at a young age. To fulfill this mission, a major programming element is the Arts in Community Education program. Programming encompasses many arts areas including music, dance, literary arts, theater, visual arts, and multi-disciplinary arts.

The Arts in Community Education Program:
· With support of the Upper Arlington Board of Education the Arts in Community Education Program provides funding and planning assistance for the City's public, private, and parochial schools to contract with local artists to conduct onsite workshops, residencies, and performances.

· Offers two annual Doris Nelson Scholarships, each of $1,000, to high school seniors who are continuing their education in the arts. The Friends of the Arts provide funding for the Doris Nelson Scholarships.

· Offers one annual Judith Chalker Scholarship for $1,000, to a high school senior who is continuing their education in the literary arts. The Friends of the Arts provide funding for the Judith Chalker Scholarship.

· Organizes/curates three visual arts exhibitions of students' work from all grade levels at the City's Concourse Gallery.

Upper Arlington Cultural Arts Division
Artist Residency

In conjunction with the Arts in Community Education Program, the Cultural Arts Division supports artist residencies that allow students to work with professional artists. Students explore the disciplines of writing, visual, musical and performing arts, to learn about various processes and explore the world with the help and guidance of professional artists.

Artist Ann Silverman completed an artist residency in 2002 and described her role as an artist in the schools, "to stretch boundaries, particularly the boundaries that our own expectations help build. I think it is wise to be wary of the expectations invested in a product. There is so much to be learned within the process itself."
