Historic Preservation Task Force

Contributing, Non-Contributing Homes Identified Within Historic District

List of Contributing Structures | Map of Contributing Structures | Informational Brochure

At the close of 2008, City Council adopted Historic Preservation legislation relative to the community’s Historic District south of Lane Avenue. Since that time, the City has worked with a preservationist consultant to create a map and list showing the status of all homes in the district relative to their conformance or non-conformance with the standards necessary to qualify as a historic structure based on the original map and criteria used when the historic district was established.

Any of the homes within the Historic District designated as contributing structures are subject to the legislation, in an attempt to encourage the preservation of these homes and to uphold the unique character of the district. Under this law, a six-month delay is imposed on any property owner wishing to completely or substantially demolish a historically significant home. The delay was put in place so that alternatives to total demolition can be thoughtfully considered before any action is taken or expenses incurred. It also was designed to only apply to plans for extreme exterior renovations or replacements, allowing homeowners to make many different upgrades to their homes to meet with modern-day standards, without finding their plans have fallen subject to the legislation.

The City’s Development Department has created an informational brochure outlining the standards, definitions and processes involved when the new legislation is triggered by a proposed demolition, including details of possible exemptions from the standard regulations.

The brochure, map and designation list for all homes within the Historic District can also be obtained by calling the Development Department at 583-5070.
