Residential Permit Descriptions
Fences
A fence permit is required for the installation of any fence. Fences located in a front yard cannot be installed more than 15 feet forward of the building setback and cannot exceed 42 inches in height. Side and rear yard fences may not exceed six feet in height. Unless permission is granted from all abutting property owners to construct otherwise, fences shall be constructed with posts facing the interior of the property. It is recommended that residents have their property surveyed to verify the locations of all property lines and easements, and check for buried utility lines.
Satellite Dishes
Permits are required for the installation of a satellite dish with a diameter exceeding 18 inches. This dish cannot be placed more than 15 feet above the ground site on which it is located. The maximum diameter of the satellite antenna may not exceed 12 feet. All wires shall be placed at least 12 inches below ground. Satellite dished must be permanently mounted and should not be placed within a required front yard, side yard, easement or right-of-way.
Swimming Pools
Before submitting a swimming pool permit application, the applicant must obtain two sets of plans including survey plan or complete, accurate site plan, filtering system data, fence plan, electrical plan, plumbing supply, return, and drainage plan and the pool plan showing depth marking locations and text. Every swimming pool must be completely enclosed by a fence at least 45 inches high.
Outdoor Entertainment
Any Upper Arlington resident may hold any outdoor event or entertainment such as wedding reception, outdoor office party, carnival, fair etc. by obtaining an outdoor entertainment license. The license fee is $75.00 for each day of the event. The applicant must also obtain written consent from any tenants of property within a distance of four hundred feet from the site of the event.
Outdoor Decks
When submitting an outdoor deck permit application, the homeowner and/or contractor must submit two sets of plans, which include: site plan, foundation plan, framing plan, section and elevations. Special note: The Upper Arlington Building Code does not allow structural wood to be place below grade. Therefore, a minimum 12-inch diameter by 32-inch deep solid concrete pier is required under all structural wooden posts support the deck framing. Each post must then be placed on an aluminum show or bracket, which sits on the concrete pier. Also be aware of the following design requirements: All decks must be attached or contiguous to the principal building on the lot, and may be located in an interior side yard or rear yard as long as they are at least 3’ from the side or rear lot line and do not occupy any part of a platted easement. However, if a deck encroaches into any required side or rear yard, as set for in the zoning code, it cannot exceed 2’ above grade at any point within 6’ of the decks perimeter, an it may not have any roof or wall planes, except a 42” guardrail with up to 3’-6” handgrip. If it does not encroach into the required side or rear yard, these restrictions do not apply.
