Every year the Upper Arlington Labor Day Arts Festival Jury works hard to bring the best and brightest of festival artists to this premier event. Over 190 artists will represent a variety of media including ceramics and drawing to fiber, jewelry, painting, glass, sculpture, photography and wood meaning the Festival offers something for everyone's artistic palate.
In 2008 the Upper Arlington Labor Day Arts Festival is planning to go digital. Many festivals have already gone over to digital jurying citing ease for artists and promoters and the unavailability of image projectors and carousels in an industry embracing digital verses images. The industry standard is a process known as Zapp and was developed by WESTAF. ZAPP™ enables individual artists to apply online to multiple art shows, either through a central Web site, www.zapplication.org, or through the Web sites of specific art shows. The online application process also allows artists to directly upload digital images of their artwork for jury review. The result is that all artwork in the system is in a consistent, high quality, digital format. The digital images are presented to the jurors of each show, and the system allows them to score online. Visit www.zapplication.org for more information. We will be providing more information as we move forward with this exciting change. Artist ProspectusThe deadline for 2008 has passed. If you are an interested artist for 2009 please send your contact information to arts@uaoh.net. HOW TO APPLY • Artists working in the same studio and using the studio name may request to exhibit in the same booth for one booth fee, but must submit separate jurying fees as the work will be juried separately. • No late applications will be accepted. • Do not send space fees prior to jurying. • Accepted artists’, wait listed artists’ and Artists whose work is not accepted will receive notification April 21. WHAT TO SEND • Completed application from each applying artist. • $20 non-refundable jury fee. • Four images numbered to correspond with the description list on the application. Send only the images requested: three representing the range of work you will be showing, plus one booth image. We will not jury your work without a booth image. Booth images are important, both in terms of your presentation as well as your overall work. High quality professional images are important also. Images must be current and accurately reflect the work to be exhibited. Images should not include the name or face of the artist. If they do; you will be required to submit another image. • Include a 50 word artist statement about your process. APPLICATIONS AVAILABLE January 2008 APPLICATIONS DEADLINE Friday, February 15, 2008 ARTIST NOTIFICATION Monday, April 21, 2008 FEES DUE Saturday, May 31, 2008 JURY PROCESS Our jury convenes in March and includes 3 jurors that have been chosen on the basis of their experiences in working with a broad spectrum of fine arts and fine crafts. The jury previews each category then the four images, three of work and one of booth, provided by the artists are reviewed simultaneously at a more deliberate pace. Jurors enter their individual scores next to a corresponding number for each artist on individual computers. Work is evaluated using a scale of 1–7 (seven is best) and the mean and median of each category is then calculated to determine what work will be accepted, rejected, or put on a waitlist. IF YOU ARE ACCEPTED Artist notification will be sent April 21, 2008. Fees are due May 31, 2008. Please make checks payable to the City of Upper Arlington. In the event of cancellations, no fees will be refunded after August 1, 2008. We understand emergency cancellations may arise-they will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. Artists may reserve space in an individual tent provided by the Labor Day Arts Festival or an open space for his or her own tent’s setup. REPRODUCTION GUIDELINES • All reproductions must be signed and numbered in editions of no more than 750. • All reproductions whether framed or unframed, must be clearly and individually labeled “REPRODUCTION.” No other terms may be used. • Framed reproductions may be displayed on one wall of the booth, not to exceed ten (10) linear feet. All unframed reproductions must be displayed in browse bins. • Unframed reproductions may not be displayed in the same browse bin with original artworks. • No “hand-colored” reproductions. ARTIST CHECK-IN: August 31, 3–6 p.m. September 1, 7–8:30 a.m. EVENT Monday, September 1, 10 a.m.–5 p.m. CHECKLIST · Completed application form on zapplication.com · $20 non-refundable jury fee for each medium entered · Four images per medium entered, labeled as indicated in instructions, including Booth image—do not submit an application without a booth image · Include 50 word artist statement about your process TENT/CANOPY GUIDELINES • All tents or canopies must be flame resistant. Documentation is required to support this. • Tents must be anchored on all four corners to withstand 80 mph winds. • Responsibility of compliance rests with the artist. Fire Prevention Office personnel at 614-583-5115 will answer any questions concerning the above guidelines. Our on-site jurors will judge participant’s work at the festival booth. All exhibits must be in place by 9 a.m. Monday, September 1 as judging will begin at that time. Award recipients will be invited to return next year without jurying and will receive an open space at no charge. Each artist must be present and oversee his/her work. Booths may not be moved from the assigned space before 5:15 p.m. For your comfort we suggest you furnish your own table, chairs, and umbrellas for shade. Electrical service is not available. The Upper Arlington Arts Festival does not take a percentage of artist’s profits. The artist handles all sales. WE OFFER • Free parking provided in a lot set aside for the artists • A continental breakfast • An opportunity to order box lunches (delivered to each booth) • Volunteers for booth sitting with advanced scheduling • An extensive marketing campaign (print media, television and radio) • $1,350 in awards • 50 postcards by request so that artists can notify their customers about the event • Programs published with the artists’ names, a map of the festival area and the festival events • A well-marked map and list of nearby motels • Registration on Sunday, August 31, 3–6 p.m.,or Monday, September 1 from 7–8:30 a.m. WHAT WE ACCEPT Original artwork in the following mediums: • Baskets • Ceramics • Digital • Drawing • Enamel • Fiber • Glass • Graphics • Jewelry • Leather • Metal • Mixed Media 2-D • Mixed Media 3-D • Painting • Paper • Photography • Printmaking • Sculpture • Wood • Other WHAT WE DO NOT ACCEPT All work must be the original, hand-produced work of the artists and representative of the work submitted to the festival jury. Items not accepted include kit work, manufactured items, molded ceramics (unless molds are designed by the artist), dried flower arrangements, commercial photography, “buy/sell” items or work produced by anyone other than the applying artist. Zapplication Jurying Q & A Artists have contacted us with questions regarding this new process and I’ll attempt to answer them here. Q. It takes a lot of technical understanding to really be able to set up the zapp information or more money to pay someone else to figure it out. A. Zapplications provides a list of photographers familiar with the digital process-as you would pay them to take slides of your images so you would pay them to take digital images. You do not need any special software to access ZAPP™. If you are formatting your own images you will need image management software. ZAPP™ recommends Photoshop Elements. Q. A slide image cannot be digitally manipulated and what you see is what you get. A. Shows do not have access to the artists’ images. The artist has complete control over the images. Artists save money on reproductions of slides. Artists will be able to upload up to 20 digital images to be stored in an online portfolio. Artists select which images to submit for each show and artists' images and information are kept secure and confidential. We trust the artists to show genuine images of their work. While it is true that you cannot digitally manipulate, the bulb and slide projector often distort an image. Silver jewelry looks gold with a yellow bulb and a pink bulb distorts color pigments on paintings. Unfortunately with these less-than-true colors what you see is often not what you get. Q. Some shows have simply had artists put their slides onto a disc. A. While that may work for some shows, our staff is not qualified to upload images nor do we have the software Zapp does to show those images in a way beneficial to artists. The ZAPP™ System ZAPP™ enables individual artists to apply online to multiple art shows through a central Web site, www.zapplication.org The online application process also artists to directly upload digital images of their artwork for jury review. The result will be that all artwork in the system will be in a consistent, quality, digital format. High-resolution digital images of artwork will be presented to the jury of each show, and slide projectors will be replaced with high-resolution projectors connected to a specialized digital media player called a Roku HD1000. The online application system will also enable jurors to score online. Benefits to Artists · Using ZAPP™ is free to artists. · ZAPP™ resides on the Internet, so artists can manage applications while traveling. · Artists can manage multiple applications through ZAPP™. · Contact information only needs to be entered once into ZAPP™. · ZAPP™ is paperless. · ZAPP™'s e-mail ability allows immediacy in communication. · Artists save money on reproductions of slides. · Artists will be able to upload up to 20 digital images to be stored in an online portfolio. Artists will select which images to submit for each show. · ZAPP™ provides consistent projection quality for jurors. · Artists' images and information are kept secure and confidential. Internet & E-mail In order to apply to shows using ZAPP™, you must use a computer that has Internet access. ZAPP™ works with broadband cable or DSL Internet connections, as well as with a 56k dial-up connection. You must have an e-mail address to use ZAPP™. If you do not have an e-mail address, establish a free account with Yahoo! or Hotmail. Hardware To access ZAPP™, you will need a computer, preferably no more than eight years old. You are not required to have a printer. Software You do not need any special software to access ZAPP™. If you are formatting your own images you will need an image management software. ZAPP™ recommends Photoshop Elements. How to Apply to Shows Artists can apply through ZAPP™ by following these steps: 1. Prepare your artwork images formatted to the Image Preparation specifications. 2. Create a profile by entering basic contact information and creating a username and password to ZAPP™. 3. Upload up to 40 digital images of your artwork to your image portfolio. 4. Apply to your choice of participating shows. 5. Choose the required number of images to apply to a specific show from your image portfolio. 6. Submit an application online. 7. Pay the application fee online with a credit card or mail in a check. 8. Artists receive e-mail notifications when their applications have been received and when they have been accepted or declined. 9. Artists can view their application status at any time on the My ZAPPlications page and can choose to accept or decline show invitations. Image Specifications for ZAPP™ To apply to art shows, fairs and festivals through ZAPP™, please size your images to the following dimensions: Dimensions: 1920 pixels horizontal /1920 pixels vertical File Format: Baseline JPG (do not use progressive JPG format) Compression: Please size your image to be no more than 1.8 MB in file size. On average, your image will be roughly 1.2 MB. Larger is not necessarily better. Please consult a professional vendor to determine if compression for your artwork is needed.PLEASE DO NOT SAVE YOUR JPG AS A PROGRESSIVE JPG FILE. Progressive JPGs will be read by the Web site. However the large format images used during the jury will not work properly if the files are saved as progressive files. Media: Internet submissions only. File Name: ZAPP™ will automatically rename your files Please size your image to be 1920 pixels on both edges. If your image is not square, please mask your image with black to bring your image to 1920x1920 pixels. No other size will be accepted for jury use. If your image is vertical, please format with black vertical bands on the left and right. If your image is horizontal, please format with black horizontal bands on the top and bottom. Preparing Images for Uploading Following are generic instructions for reducing the resolution (making the picture smaller) in a number of photo-editing programs. The steps may vary slightly depending on the program. 1. Start with an image that has at least one edge longer than 1920 pixels and saved as a tiff. 2. Open the image in a photo-editing program. 3. Open the Image Size or Resize dialog box, which is usually located in one of the toolbar menus. 4. For pictures to be viewed on screen, set the resolution to 72 ppi or dpi. 5. Take your longest edge and size it down to 1920 pixels, the shorter edge should size down in proportion. 6. Go to Canvas Size and expand the canvas around your shorter edge to 1920 pixels. If the canvas color is white change it to black. 7. Click Save As. 8. Rename the picture. 9. Save it in the JPEG format. 10. This preserves the original TIFF file (raw image) for future use. Emerging Artists Are you an emerging artist or an artist looking for opportunities to show and sell your artwork? This is your opportunity to try showing your artwork as a festival artist, without the established festival artists’ cost of a jury fee, or booth fee. Continuing the tradition of quality and variety of artwork into the future, the Upper Arlington Labor Day Arts Festival has brought forth emerging artists onto the festival grounds with the Emerging Artists Tent. Established to provide an opportunity for artists beginning their career as festival artists, the Emerging Artists Tent invites emerging artists interested in pursuing a career as a festival artist to apply, jury and exhibit their art for the first time as a festival artist exhibitor. Through this supportive environment, the participating emerging artist can try exhibiting their artwork in a new venue and learn from established Festival artists. Apply to be an emerging artist for the 2008 Upper Arlington Labor Day Arts Festival. As an emerging artist you will be juried separately from the festival artists and will have a separate booth area to display your artwork.
