2006 Police Safety Survey

RESULTS DOCUMENT (pdf file)
In early 2006, the Police Division began the process of conducting a small survey of Upper Arlington residents to help gauge their awareness of and satisfaction with the existing services provided to the community, to identify any issues that may require additional attention, and to help the division best prioritize the services it provides within existing resources.

Printed versions of the survey were mailed to 400 randomly-selected households in mid-March, asking that the adult in the house with the next birthday complete the survey. The survey was also posted on the City’s Web site, enabling interested residents to self-select into the survey. Any surveys received from the Web version were used as supporting data to the survey process.

A total of 118 surveys were returned, translating to a 29.5 percent response rate. Some highlights emerging from the survey include:

Police services rated most important:
• Neighborhood Police patrol
• Investigating child abuse
• Arresting drunk drivers
• Safety education for children
• Enforcing narcotics laws
• Cyber-crime investigations/online predators

When asked about the competency of the Upper Arlington Police Division:
• 87% believe Upper Arlington officers are professional and positive.
• 86% stated that Upper Arlington officers are approachable.
• 91% believe that frequent Police patrols are important to suppressing crime.
• 88% believe Upper Arlington officers are doing a competent job.

When asked about their feelings of security in the City:
• 89% feel safe within City parks/recreation areas.
• 89% feel safe in their homes at night.
• 84% feel secure when shopping in Upper Arlington.
• 94% stated that they feel safe in Upper Arlington overall.

The Police Division wishes to thank those residents who completed the survey. Their input will prove invaluable to the division in the coming months as it works to prioritize the level and type of safety services it provides the community within existing resources.

The key survey results are provided in Survey Results document. Many open-ended answers have been summarized, with an indication of how many residents made similar comments, and only with the inclusion of items within the realm of Police Division and law enforcement activities.

If you have additional questions about the survey, please contact the Police Division Community Relations Officer at 583-5195.
